Today is 2 years to the day that we went to this museum – I was wondering when the dates would synch! The top photo here shows a traditional wooden water mill – this was only one of several examples of mills in the museum. The bottom photo shows the large lake in the middle of the museum – exhibits go all round the edge, though this was taken from the terrace where we enjoyed a much needed ice cream (and also watched a wedding party – I must admit, it certainly is a great location for wedding photos!).

These are examples of rural houses – the top one is sadly damaged due to the after-effects of a massive storm a few days earlier (I think you can still see the massive branch that broke off and fell through the roof). The bottom one shows the blue pigment that is often used when plastering rural houses. As well as the blue there is also a very bright green pigment used sometimes, it certainly brightens up the villages.

The Museum of Traditional Folk Civilisation is one of those museums that really does take all day, and is absolutely exhausting because there is simply so much to see. I’ve been twice now, and I’m sure there are still things I haven’t seen. It showcases traditional rural life in what is arguably one of the best outdoor museums in Romania. I think my photos from here will also, like the ones of the view from the Counsellor’s Tower, keep us going for a while
This is from the section of wooden houses and churches from the Maramures (northern Romania) region.
