Romania 2007 (16) 038

Even though this was taken in October, you can see it was still very warm and dry. In the summer during the “canicula” (heatwave) walking by or (if you were brave) through the fountain was *such* a blessed relief from the relentless sun!

Standing to attention

I never did tire of taking pictures of the Piata Mare fountain. I’ll show it from different angles over the next few entries.

Gheorghe Lazar statue

Posted by Jackie on November 15, 2009

Romania 2007 (16) 036

This statue had been hidden behind the stage on Piata Mare, so it was only when I returned in October and found the stage had gone that I was able to see who he was. Gheorghe Lazar was the founder of the first Romanian language school, in Bucharest in 1818.

4,3,2

Romania 2007 (16) 035

This poster is for a film showing the following week at the Arta cinema. “4 Months, 3 Weeks, 2 Days” (or as everyone called it, “4,3,2″) won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 2007. I saw it in Glasgow last year. It’s rather harrowing (understatement) but is an absolutely remarkable film, I do recommend you see it if you haven’t already. Details about the film are here.

More posters

Romania 2007 (16) 034

This I think was in the window of the Primaria (town hall) on Piata Mica – more posters outlining the various events taking place for the year of culture.

Huddle

Here are the cafe chairs close-up. I just liked the patterns of the wicker, the contrast with the ornate metal chairs behind, and the angles of the chairs.

Inward-looking

These chairs are on the terrace in Piata Mica, I think outside La Piazzetta.

This is a closer look at the Old folks home, or “Azilul”, that gives the street its name.

Roadworks

Posted by Jackie on November 8, 2009

Romania 2007 (16) 030

This is along Str. Azilului, just down from the Liar’s Bridge, where I was staying for my final week. Obviously due to roadworks cars could only get to the end of the road, but luckily I didn’t have to lug my luggage too far to the waiting taxi! The red gate about half way down on the right was the entrance to where I was staying.

Reschner’s Clavier

Just to the side of the Liars’ Bridge (Podul Minciunilor) coming off Piata Mica was this lovely old building – I’ve shown pictures of the green building opposite it several times. You can see the distinctive Sibiu roof “eyes” really well on this one.
