Just a short way further down Str. General Magheru from the Ursuline Church is this building, which I’m pretty sure is a school. This is it as seen from the junction of Magheru and Str. Avram Iancu.

This church, on Str. General Magheru, is the Ursuline Church. It is, as far as I know, Roman Catholic, but is known as the Ursuline church as it was taken over in 1755 by Ursuline nuns. Prior to that it was firstly a Dominican monastery and then taken over by the Lutherans, where it was known as Klosterkirche.

PS Thanks to everyone who has visited and left comments recently, I do really appreciate it. I am snowed under at work but hopefully after my evil deadline (next Monday) is out of the way I will be able to return the favour and visit your blogs 🙂

Just to the left of yesterday’s picture, this is looking up at Turnul Sfaturilor (Councillors’ Tower) in Piata Mare.

As this was a Sunday afternoon and a nice day I spent the afternoon wandering around, snapping away. This is at the corner of Piata Mare, where it is met by Str. Avram Iancu (where the cars are parked).

For much of 2007 this statue on Piata Mare was hidden away, as it was situated right where the temporary main stage was. I did look to see who he was, but I’m afraid I’ve forgotten – it was nearly 2 years ago! (wow, can’t believe that – it’s gone so fast).

I’m not entirely sure who these guys were – there were 3 or 4 of them, all dressed in the same ‘uniform’ (yellow t-shirt, red baseball cap, jeans), zooming around on these little motorised, well, I don’t know what you’d call them actually! I assume they were something to do with the culture/artisan-ish thing that was going on that afternoon in Piata Mare.
The photo on the hoarding is of George Enescu, who is probably Romania’s most famous composer.

Here’s another view of the displays that were in Piata Mare. The one in the foreground features Mihai Eminescu (1850-1889), Romania’s most famous and celebrated poet.
[Edited to add: whoops no it’s not – have just noticed it’s George Enescu, not Mihai Eminescu! Sorry about that!]

Wandering into Piata Mare I found a number of these boards. BCR is the Commercial Bank of Romania, who were obviously sponsoring this. If I remember correctly there were also a few artisan stalls as well as these large hoardings. This one in the foreground highlights the Hungarian connection (Sibiu is in Transylvania which used to be part of Hungary – Matei Corvin (Matyas Corvinus in Hungarian) is a famous Transylvanian king claimed by both Hungarians and Romanians). The board in the background showcases one of Romania’s most famous sons, the sculptor Constantin Brancusi and his famous “Endless Column” sculpture.

I’ve not shown any of the architecture in Str. Balcescu for a while, so here’s a photo to make up for that 🙂
