This shows part of the medieval city walls, really marking the boundary of the historic old town.

This is in Piata Mica, I liked the pattern and symmetry of the row of lamps.

Egg?

Romania 2007 (12) 009

While all the music was going on in Piata Mare, in Piata Mica next door, this sculpture was starting to take shape. This isn’t the finished product (you can see the guys still working on it) – I’ll come back to it later on when it’s done. It always reminded me of an egg.

Artmania quiet moment

Posted by Jackie on April 27, 2009

Romania 2007 (12) 010

From a bit of a distance in Piata Mica I zoomed in on these two Artmania visitors enjoying a quiet moment away from the music which was going full pelt in Piata Mare. Below is a picture without the zoom – I loved the contrast of the Goth fashion and the historic architecture.

“Blacker than Copsa Mica”

Posted by Jackie on April 26, 2009

Romania 2007 (12) 008

One weekend in mid-June saw Piata Mare taken over by the Artmania festival. “Blacker than Copsa Mica” was a headline in the local paper – Copsa Mica is a town a train ride away from Sibiu which is notorious for having the most polluting industry, which belched out fumes which would turn washing on the line black, and (more seriously) it had the worst life expectancy in Romania. It’s still not exactly the most desirable place in the world – I’ve not been there, but I have been on trains which stopped there and there was definitely an industrial smell that I wouldn’t want to be breathing in for too long, that’s for sure.

Anyway, Artmania is a music festival for all things Goth, and this photo shows a few people waiting for the first act to start. Piata Mare was cordoned off for the weekend, those of us without wristbands for the festival could only walk round the outer edges, though as it wasn’t really my kind of music I spent the weekend exploring elsewhere. I do remember on the first day of the festival (I think when I took this photo), I was wearing a navy blue top and navy blue skirt, and felt positively colourful, as hordes of people dressed in black took over the city centre! (the reds and whites you see here were definitely in the minority!).

Memorial (3)

Romania 2007 (12) 005

The writing under the cross is a Bible verse, John 5:25, which translates “Truly, truly, I say to you, the time is coming and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live.”

Memorial (1)

Romania 2007 (12) 001

This is a photo of the memorial to those that lost their lives in Sibiu in the 1989 revolution which saw the overthrow of Ceausescu. I’m a bit confused as I have just done a Google search to find out more about it and seen a picture (from 2002) of a different memorial in Piata Mare, by the Town Hall, which definitely wasn’t there when I visited in 2006 and 2007. This one is near the Dumbrava department store, heading out of the city centre. Over the next few days I’ll show some close-ups of this monument.

More from the army parade

Posted by Jackie on April 22, 2009

Romania 2007 (11) 019

Heading back home I found the army parade (complete with speeches) was still going on in Piata Mare. I’m not sure who the guy in blue was, or why he was in a different colour to everyone else.

Ursuline Church interior

Posted by Jackie on April 21, 2009

Romania 2007 (11) 018

On my way back up the hill from yesterday’s picture, I noticed the outer doors to the Ursuline Church were open, so I peeked inside and took a picture of the inside of the church.

(Apologies for not returning blog comments – I have a virus (medical not computer) which makes spending too long on the computer uncomfortable – will hopefully return to normal service soon 🙂 ).
