Gogosi

This was another of my favourite places! A little place on Str. Balcescu, selling gogosi (pronounced “goggosh”), which are basically hot doughnuts with a filling – I must admit I usually went for the chocolate, but they also did apricot, strawberry, jam, and it’s also possible to have savoury fillings though I don’t remember this lot doing them. Fortunately it was so hot that I couldn’t cope with them most days – in the winter I suspect I would have had at least one a day 🙂 The left hand window was where you placed your order and paid – I think the guy in the photo just got in front of me!

The other things they sold which I liked were covrigi (pronounced “covreej” – hard “j”) – which are salted bread, basically pretzels. Mmmmm.

Concert posters

Romania 2007 (15) 036

This is in Str. Balcescu, where lots of the concerts and theatrical productions that took place in Sibiu as part of the year of Culture 2007 were displayed. The Spanish singer Julio Iglesias came to town (he played in a few Romanian cities as part of his tour) and Piata Mare was turned into a huge concert venue with seating and everything, and cordoned off for those of us plebs who didn’t have tickets (probably most of the city, given that the tickets were really expensive). I was actually out of town the night of the concert fortunately – I was escorting my Other Half back to Bucharest to get his flight home. This was taken the week after the concert, but before another poster was put up to take Julio’s place.

Str. Balcescu again

Romania 2007 (15) 032

I haven’t shown a photo of Str. Balcescu for a while, so here’s one to make up for that lack 🙂

Judging by the progress of the photos over the last few days, I had either just got back from the supermarket and was walking home from the bus-stop, or had just been to see one of the groups I was working with – either way this group of pictures says “heading home” to me, as I lived just off Str. Balcescu.

And an aside – this post marks 1 year of Sibiu Daily Photo blog! I’m rather embarrassed that having lived there just over 2 months, I took so many photos – I thought the blog would last 6 months max! I’ve still got more to come :p

Transylvania kitsch

Being in Transylvania, I expected to see quite a bit of Dracula kitsch. Luckily Sibiu mostly steered clear of it, but while I was living there this place (amusement arcade I think) opened up on Str. Balcescu and got the man himself to advertise it.

Giant invading jellyfish!

I have absolutely no idea what this was all about in Str. Balcescu. The jellyfish were just there for a day, if I recall correctly.

I’ve not shown any of the architecture in Str. Balcescu for a while, so here’s a photo to make up for that 🙂
