Casa de Cultura a Sindicatelor

A last look for now at the Dumbrava flowers, looking towards the building on the right which is the Casa de Cultura a Sindicatelor (roughly translated as House of Culture of the Unions). To the right of the picture by the advertising hoarding you might be able to make out the white columns of the memorial to the people from Sibiu who died in the 1989 Revolution.

This is a close-up of the stone in yesterday’s bottom photo. It commemorates an anti-communist demonstration in 1989. The plaque reads:

“Glory.

On the morning of 21 December 1989, in this square 28 residents of Sibiu demonstrated for the first time against the Communist dictatorship.

Association ‘Sibiu 21 December 1989’.”

It was unveiled on the 10th anniversary of the demonstration.

This is another memorial to those who died in the 1989 Revolution, this time in a part of town I only visited very briefly when I went to interview someone for my work. I’ve mislaid my map so can’t remember the name of the street, unfortunately.

In memoriam

This marker in Piata Mare marks the spot where the first person was killed during the revolution of December 1989. It reads: “On this spot the first victim fell in December 1989”. Romania’s revolution saw a lot more bloodshed than the other revolutions which happened across central and eastern Europe at the end of 1989, which were mostly peaceful.

The writing under the cross is a Bible verse, John 5:25, which translates “Truly, truly, I say to you, the time is coming and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live.”

Memorial (1)

This is a photo of the memorial to those that lost their lives in Sibiu in the 1989 revolution which saw the overthrow of Ceausescu. I’m a bit confused as I have just done a Google search to find out more about it and seen a picture (from 2002) of a different memorial in Piata Mare, by the Town Hall, which definitely wasn’t there when I visited in 2006 and 2007. This one is near the Dumbrava department store, heading out of the city centre. Over the next few days I’ll show some close-ups of this monument.
