Helping the tourists

Posted by Jackie on August 20, 2008

Staying in Piata Mare for this picture, these information points including a map and arrows to nearby places of interest were dotted around the square, and further afield as well. When I was here for a few days in 2006 none of this sort of thing was there – in fact both Piata Mare and Piata Mica (aka ‘Little Square’, just next to Piata Mare or ‘Big Square’) were building sites, in preparation for the 2007 year as European Capital of Culture. The old historic centre of Sibiu is pretty compact so it wasn’t hard to find your way around, but to start with these maps did come in very handy! This one is pointing the way to three of the surviving towers of the old city ramparts.

The ornate yellow-white building you can just see on the right is the Town Hall, and just to the left of it is the Brukenthal Museum. Both will feature in their own right at some point in this blog, no doubt!

These maps are great things for tourists; very, very useful. We need more of them here.
