View from Turnul Sfaturilor (5)

These two pictures show the view over Piata Mare, and beyond to more views of the southern Carpathian mountains. You might also be able to make out the Ramada Hotel which I’ve shown here before, and in the top photo (bottom left) the stage erected for shows and concerts during the Year of Culture festivities (actually I think it’s still there, at least during summer, even though it’s now 2 years since Sibiu was City of Culture).

This is looking down along the roof of the Roman Catholic church that divides Piata Mica from Piata Mare, which you can see on the left of the first photo. From this angle the dome of the Orthodox Cathedral can also be seen (between the two Catholic church towers which are closest and go above the horizon), and also the spires of two Reformed churches (just to the right of the larger Catholic church tower). You can also see that from this direction Sibiu is cradled by mountains, these are the southern Carpathians.

Another look over Piata Mica, this time though including the newer blocks on the outskirts of town and the countryside beyond. If I’ve got my directions correct, this is looking north.

Please take the time to visit Tehran 24 (previously Portland Daily Photo, and currently being used to distribute photos and information as it is not yet blocked by the Iranian authorities). A City Daily Photo blogger from Tehran has been missing since Saturday, his family are concerned he has been arrested for taking photos at the recent demonstrations.

This view from the tower is looking down at Piata Mica. Hopefully you can see Podul Minciunilor (the “Liars’ Bridge”), plus what we called “the egg” (but which a previous commenter here said the locals called “the jellyfish”).

View from Turnul Sfaturilor (1)

I can’t remember how many steps there are to the top of the Tower (too many!), but it really is worth the effort, for fantastic 360° views over the Old Town and beyond. It of course goes without saying that I took loads of photos, so I reckon these views will keep me going for at least a week

This one is looking over Piata Mica in the foreground (the open-air cafes to the right include my favourite, La Piazzetta). Behind that the view is dominated by the Evangelical Cathedral in Piata Huet (to the right of the cathedral you might be able to see some red and orange walls, they are from Piata Huet). Then further still you see past the old town to the outskirts, and beyond that the Transylvanian countryside.

Clock mechanism

I took my beloved up the Turnul Sfaturilor (Counsellors’ Tower) between Piata Mica and Piata Mare so that he could enjoy the views from the top. Before we reached the top though we walked past this, which is the mechanism which drives the huge clock at the top of the tower.
