I showed the exterior of the synagogue on Str. Constitutiei some time ago. As part of the Capital of Culture 2007 there was, amongst many other things, a festival of Jewish culture, and as part of that I had the privilege of being able to see inside the beautiful synagogue. The Jewish community in Sibiu (as elsewhere in Romania) is now very small, but very faithful and the people that remain work really hard to maintain the community and the fabric of the building, as well as the two or three Jewish cemeteries in Sibiu county. I was shown round by a lovely friendly young man, who explained the history of the building and the significance of the various parts of the synagogue, and who then very kindly let me wander round and take pictures. As this was a chance in a million (the synagogue didn’t seem to be open very much for the public other than at this time of the festival) I took rather a lot (!), and so I will share those pictures over the whole of the next week.

The Orthodox Cathedral looked just as impressive at night as it did during the day.

Being in Transylvania, I expected to see quite a bit of Dracula kitsch. Luckily Sibiu mostly steered clear of it, but while I was living there this place (amusement arcade I think) opened up on Str. Balcescu and got the man himself to advertise it.

This is the (always immaculate) exterior of Hotel Imparatul Romanilor on Str. Balcescu. This is, as I understand it, the swishest hotel in the centre (4 star, I think).

I have absolutely no idea what this was all about in Str. Balcescu. The jellyfish were just there for a day, if I recall correctly.

Here’s a couple of closer views of yesterday’s church.

This little church stands in the square front of the bus and train stations. I have to admit I know nothing about it at all, it’s not marked on my map, so I don’t know what it is called and have no idea if it is in use or not. I assume it’s some sort of Orthodox chapel, but I’d love it if any locals could explain! Va multumesc mult!

I know I’ve shown a similar picture before, but I must admit that whenever I walked past the Ursuline Church on a day like this, I found the white, green and yellow of the tower against the deep blue sky irresistible!

Here’s another view of the Ursuline Church on Str. General Magheru, looking lovely against the blue sky.
