Ursuline Church
Posted by Jackie on February 27, 2009
This church, on Str. General Magheru, is the Ursuline Church. It is, as far as I know, Roman Catholic, but is known as the Ursuline church as it was taken over in 1755 by Ursuline nuns. Prior to that it was firstly a Dominican monastery and then taken over by the Lutherans, where it was known as Klosterkirche.

Zooming around
Posted by Jackie on February 23, 2009
I’m not entirely sure who these guys were – there were 3 or 4 of them, all dressed in the same ‘uniform’ (yellow t-shirt, red baseball cap, jeans), zooming around on these little motorised, well, I don’t know what you’d call them actually! I assume they were something to do with the culture/artisan-ish thing that was going on that afternoon in Piata Mare.
The photo on the hoarding is of George Enescu, who is probably Romania’s most famous composer.

Cultural journey
Posted by Jackie on February 21, 2009
Wandering into Piata Mare I found a number of these boards. BCR is the Commercial Bank of Romania, who were obviously sponsoring this. If I remember correctly there were also a few artisan stalls as well as these large hoardings. This one in the foreground highlights the Hungarian connection (Sibiu is in Transylvania which used to be part of Hungary – Matei Corvin (Matyas Corvinus in Hungarian) is a famous Transylvanian king claimed by both Hungarians and Romanians). The board in the background showcases one of Romania’s most famous sons, the sculptor Constantin Brancusi and his famous “Endless Column” sculpture.
